Ready for the Moment Everything Else Fails

Emergency lighting has exactly one job: to work in the moment everything else doesn't. When the power fails and a building needs to empty, escape routes, exits, stairwells and open areas must stay lit — immediately, reliably, and for as long as the standard demands. There is no partial credit: a system that mostly works is a system that fails the one test that matters.

WM Maintain designs, installs, tests and maintains emergency lighting to BS 5266 across commercial buildings nationwide. From monthly function tests to full estate upgrades, we keep your buildings compliant, your fire risk assessments satisfied, and your people protected.

Testing Regimes to BS 5266

The standard is specific: monthly function tests to prove every luminaire responds, and annual full-duration discharge tests to prove batteries genuinely last the rated period. Skipping either leaves a gap that surfaces only during a real evacuation — or a fire officer's inspection.

We run the complete regime for you, scheduled around building use so discharge tests never leave occupied areas unprotected. Results are logged fitting by fitting, certificates are issued for your fire safety records, and failures are reported the day they're found, not buried in a quarterly summary.

Maintenance and Remedials

Emergency luminaires fail quietly — a battery that no longer holds charge looks identical to a healthy one until it's needed. Ageing fittings, degraded batteries and lamps at end of life need replacing promptly, because every failed unit is a dark patch on someone's escape route.

Our engineers carry common batteries, lamps and fittings so routine failures are fixed during the test visit rather than becoming a second callout. Larger remedials are quoted clearly, prioritised by risk, and completed quickly — a test finding should never still be outstanding at the next test.

Design and Installation for Real Buildings

Buildings change constantly: layouts move, mezzanines appear, occupancy grows, and escape routes shift with every reconfiguration. A system designed for the building as it was five years ago may quietly fail to cover the building as it is today.

We survey premises against current standards and how the space is actually used, then design schemes that cover every escape route, exit, fire point and open area properly — not just on the drawing. Installation is planned around live operations, with minimal disruption and full certification at handover.

LED and Self-Testing Upgrades

Older fluorescent emergency fittings cost more to run, fail more often and consume engineer time every month by requiring manual testing. Modern LED and self-testing systems cut energy use, extend battery and lamp life, and automate the monthly function test entirely.

We help estates migrate incrementally — prioritising the areas where fittings are oldest and access is hardest — so the upgrade pays for itself in reduced energy, fewer failures and lighter testing overhead, rather than arriving as one large capital hit.

One Compliance Stream, Fully Managed

Emergency lighting sits at the intersection of fire safety and electrical maintenance, which is exactly why it gets missed: everyone assumes it's someone else's list. As part of a wider maintenance relationship, we simply make it ours.

Testing schedules, logbooks, certificates and remedial tracking are all managed alongside your other M&E compliance — one contract, one report, and one answer when the fire risk assessor asks whether the emergency lighting is in order: yes, and here's the evidence.

If your last full-duration test was more than a year ago — or the logbook has gaps you'd rather not explain — it's time. Talk to us and we'll survey the system, bring the testing up to date, and keep it that way.
